Change in Lunch Schedule

Starting Monday, Washington’s lunch schedule will be changing:

K-3 will go to lunch from 11:40a-12:25p

K-1 will eat first from 11:40a-12:05p and play from 12:05p-12:25p

2-3 will play first from 11:40a-12:05p and eat from 12:05p-12:25p

4-5 lunch will be from 12:25p-1:10p

4-5 will play from 12:25p-12:50p and eat from 12:50p-1:10p

Mad Science After School Session has 9 spots available!

The eight week course runs from April 14^th through June 2^nd and is open to grades 1-5. Classes are held Wednesdays from 2-3p. Register online at: http://register.madscience.org/southbay/ (choose the Washington SL location) and see the attached flyer for more details.

Bulletin Board Spruce Up – Friday, April 16^th

Nutrition Connection:  Family Day in the Garden – Thursday, April 29^th

On Thursday, April 29^th from 2:30 – 5:30p, take part in nutrition and gardening activities and sample some healthy tastings. Parent volunteers are needed for smoothie and snack preparation, supervising children in the garden, and sign creation (painting or with markers) for plants. Washington Yard Sale – Saturday, May 1^st

Mark your calendar for Washington’s first ever yard sale fundraiser, being held on Saturday, May 1^st from 8a to 2p on the front lawn of the school. We need your gently used items: clean clothing, DVDs, books, working appliances, toys, games, etc. Please bring your donations to the school on Friday, April 30^th. Additionally, volunteers are needed for Friday, April 30^th to help organize and price donated items as well as on Saturday, May 1^st to help set up, with sales and for clean up. Washington/Roosevelt Auction – Saturday, May 8^th

Tickets are available for the Washington/Roosevelt auction being held at the Veteran’s Hall in San Leandro on May 8^th from 5-10p. Advance tickets are $20/person and include dinner and dessert, dancing, mystery raffle and door prizes, and more! Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25/person. We also need your donations… Do you have a skill or your own business? Are you a baker, caterer, babysitter, handyman, mechanic, beautician, seamstress, music teacher or performer (or much much more!)? Donate your time, goods or skills! Proceeds benefit Washington’s 5^th grade outdoor adventure & fieldtrips, so come out for this great cause!! Wear your PJs & bring a blanket… See you there!

MAINTENANCE DAY – Saturday, March 27^th, 9a-1p

We need your help!! This weekend, the Booster Club will be painting the main hallway, doors and auditorium trim, building planter boxes for the ASES program and cleaning the shed in the garden area. You don’t need to be an expert painter or carpenter to help! Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on.

Things needed: Paint sprayer, paint brushes, buckets, sponges, rubber or latex gloves, cordless screw gun

Contact Sam Henselmann with any questions (samhman@yahoo.com or 510-847-9730) – and let him know if you are able to help. Even if you only have an hour to spare, your help is needed to spiff up our school! Note: There will be no daycare, so we request that you do not bring children.

WALK & ROLL TO SCHOOL – Wednesday, March 31^st

Walk & Roll to School on Cesar Chavez Day! Walk, bike, skateboard or rollerblade to school and check in at the table in the back of the school for refreshments!

PTA MEETING – Thursday, April 1^st, 6-7:30p

Join us for our next PTA meeting and make your voice heard! The booster Club will be making – and racing – paper airplanes with the kids.

Library Update

Shelving along the back wall of the library has been installed, tables and chairs are due for delivery this week. Computers and flat screen monitors are being donated for the check out stations.

Read-A-Thon

The karaoke carnival for students that reached their reading and fundraising goals will be held on Thursday, March 18^th after school & volunteers are needed to help run this event.

Art Class

The afterschool art class is having an art show on Saturday, March 27^th at Zocolo. Sandra Petrequin is in the process of setting up a second session with Susan Deming for after spring break.

Movie Night, Friday, March 26^th

The PTA has decided to host a movie night on March 26^th at 6p, with proceeds going to the 5^th grade for their outdoor adventure and field trip expenses. Volunteers are needed to help with thi event.

Honor Roll Awards Assembly

The PTA is hosting an honor roll awards assembly on March 31^st at 10am to recognize students for academic excellence, academic growth, citizenship, perfect attendance, 100% homework, and reclassification (students that have been reclassified as proficient in English).

Budget Crisis

The education budget in the San Leandro school district has been cut an additional $2.7 to $3 million, on top of last year’s cut of $2.3 million. The PTA urges you to make your opinion on these budget cuts heard!

Upcoming Events

-          DELAC is hosting a multicultural celebration the first or second Saturday in June and is asking each school to put together a booth celebrating a culture at their school. More details to come as they’re decided.

-          Washington Elementary Yard Sale: Washington Elementary is planning a yard sale fundraiser for a Saturday in May (proposed date in May 22^nd). Now is the time to start your spring cleaning and set aside your saleable donations such as books, games, clothes (clean and in good repair), electronics, household items, baby gear, etc.  If you are interested in helping organize this event, contact Daniela Mantilla.

T-Shirts

The t-shirt samples have come back and they look fantastic! Marilyn Pluth will be placing the order and t-shirts should be delivered in a few weeks.

The deadline for collecting Box Tops is Friday, February 26th for Washington to receive a check in April 2010. We have raised $300 so far — let’s see if we can make $500. Thank you for your help! Use the fish sheet sent home 2/1 or place box tops in a baggie and put them in the box next to the school office. Washington’s first Read-A-Thon February 8th – March 1st

Washington’s fist Read-A-Thon kicked off February 8th and lasts until March 1st. The Read-A-Thon has two goals: encouraging kids to read and helping Washington raise money. Minimum reading hours to receive prizes are 6 hours for Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and 8 hours for 3rd through 5th grade. Kids need to turn in their reading hours by March 1st to be eligible for prizes. The Fundraising goal is $2,300 and funds go to the Washington PTA to be used for things such as field trips and assemblies, computers and software, library improvements, books, supplies – and much much more! Read Across America – March 2nd

On Tuesday, March 2^nd, Washington Elementary will open its doors to moms, dads, grandparents, cousins, friends and important community members.
